Sight, Sounds and Smells at St. Albans Street Market

It has been said that St. Albans’ street market is maybe the most colourful and vibrant in the South of England. Every Wednesday and Saturday the whole length of St. Peter’s Street in the city centre is bustling with a variety of stall holders and visitors.

The market has over 160 stalls, and is quite unique in the diversity of goods on offer. Traders travel from quite some distance to sell fresh fish, cheeses, warm bread, clothing, electrical goods, handmade gifts, and much, much more. There is also a French market section, and a number of times throughout the year, it becomes a European market, with visiting traders from abroad. There is also a farmers’ market which is held on the second Sunday of each month, where you will find local specialties, fruit and vegetables, meat, game, cakes, etc.

The market has a very historical background, being documented as far back as the 9th century, and with a special Royal Charter granted in 1553. Many of the stallholders have been trading at the market for 20 years or more, and you can be assured that the standard of service will match the diversity and quality of goods available. In fact the quality of products and produce available at St. Albans market has won many awards.

As well as its regular markets, St. Albans also plays host to a European-style Christmas market, which has been described as a ‘magical and unforgettable experience’. One for the diary then!

The street market’s general ‘opening times’ are from early in the morning until about 4.30pm, but this obviously depends on traders’ sales and stock levels. The farmers’ market finishes about 1.30pm. These markets attract visitors from all over the country, and it’s a great spectacle to witness if you’re driving near the city - definitely worth a visit to see what goodies you can find!
