Travel in Tewin

A London commuting village between the towns of Welwyn Garden City, Hertford, Stevenage and Welwyn, Tewin is a popular village in Hertfordshire, with a population of about 2000. It is about ten miles from St. Albans, directly accessible along the North Orbital Road, but sits in a wonderful rural landscape.

Tewin dates back to Anglo Saxon times and is a quintessential English country village, with typical features such as a church, a couple of pubs, a village green and a shop, plus excellent footpaths and bridleways.

Despite being a village with a variety of community activities on offer, recent times have seen the loss of a regular bus service. A car share scheme is currently being trialled, and if you live in Tewin, this might be the perfect way to travel to and from work. Hiring a car from St. Albans Car and Van Hire would be a fair way of car sharing, splitting costs and ensuring not one person’s vehicle is overused in a culmination of journeys.

For those who don’t know the village, because of its countryside location and where it borders Panshanger Park, there is an abundance of wildlife in Tewin. There are areas set aside for the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, which are managed by volunteers, and the park itself has a wonderful Oak Trail walk, with views of Panshanger House and the beautiful landscape.

Within Tewin Orchard – a 79 year old English fruit orchard – there is a mammal hide converted from an old stable, and this can be booked by individuals or small groups to watch for badgers, foxes, deer, bats and rabbits. The orchard itself boasts a variety of different fruits, with the apples pressed and bottled as pure apple juice and sold at events to celebrate National Apple Day in Hertfordshire.
